How is Diabetes Treated?

Vital Healthcare Group

The key to diabetes treatment is to keep your blood sugar levels controlled all the time. Because type 2 diabetes is a chronic disease with no cure, healthy lifestyle choices are an important part of treating your diabetes.

Lifestyle Tips to Stay Well with Diabetes

  • Eat a healthy diet. Plan the foods you eat and spread out high carbohydrate foods over a day.
  • Drink plenty of fluids daily.
  • Keep check of your blood sugar levels.
  • Get plenty of physical activity, including walking and strengthening exercises. The American Diabetes Association recommends at least 2 ˝ hours a week of moderate aerobic exercise or 1 ˝ hours a week of vigorous aerobic exercise. Exercise helps improve the body’s use of insulin and can lower blood sugar levels in people with type 2 diabetes.
  • See your doctor regularly to check your blood glucose and other problems associated with type 2 diabetes.

Lose Weight if You Are Overweight

Losing just 10 or 15 pounds can help you be healthier and feel better. Weight loss with diabetes can do the following:
  • Lower blood sugar
  • Reduce blood pressure
  • Improve cholesterol levels
  • Lighten the stress on hips, knees, ankles and feet
  • Give you more energy.
Check with your doctor before starting a weight loss plan.

Take Prescribed Diabetes Medicine

  • Oral diabetes medicines (not insulin) that help control blood sugar levels in people whose bodies still produce some insulin (the majority of those with type 2 diabetes).
  • Insulin diabetes medicine that helps control the amount of glucose in the blood. There are many forms of insulin, which are classified by how fast they start to work and how long their effects last.
  • Other diabetes medicines, as needed, for problems such as hypertension, abnormal lipids, and others.
